Women in the Workplace

Women in Business has opened my eyes to the discrimination women and minorities face every day.  I am more educated now as a student as to what types of careers are open to me.  I have had to take note of personal biases I have had towards my personal career potential.  I have held myself back to an extent, holding on to traditionally female dominated career aspirations.

As a potential employer in the future, Women in Business has showed the benefits of a work-life balance not only for employees, but for the business as well.  If my workers are able to care for their personal well-being and their family, they will be more present at work, be healthier, and more loyal to the company (Reeves, 299-302).

As an employee, I have learned that it is important to negotiate for my salary.  It is important for the financial future and security for me and my family to negotiate.  In fact, by not negotiating a starting salary, women can end up loosing over a million dollars over their working years (Reeves, 120).

Wallowing in Complexity

Wallowing in complexity is a concept of giving a lot of deep thought to a complex question.  It involves coming up with a question first of all.  Also, the problem must be thought of from many different angles and different ways to address the problem than may initially come to mind.  Wallowing in complexity means that you can look at and analyze your questions from at least 2 different perspectives:  yours and the opposition, but possibly even more perspectives.  This concept involves understanding the history, context and important facts about your question.  Wallowing in complexity means opening your mind to many possible outcomes.  You may need to do research or conduct studies to attain more information about your complex question.  By doing these kinds of high level thinking and delving deeper, you could change your own mind or the question itself may be changed.  Wallowing in complexity is a great tool to basically have an internal di...

Male or Female? Issues Transgender People Face

            In “Aligning Bodies,” Judith Lorber and Lisa Jean Moore bring to light the burdens endured by people in our society that don’t necessarily fit into preconceived notions of sex and gender.   On a daily basis there are issues they must consider:   when filling out forms that ask for their sex, when going to the restroom and when showing legal documents that may not match the gender they identify with.   Transgender people may or may not have surgery on their chest and/or genitalia and/or face or other surgery and may choose to use hormone therapy.   Some people are born with ambiguous genitalia or with genitals or chromosomes of both sexes.   Yet others may identify as a gender different than their birth sex and choose to not alter their body physically.   There is a wide spectrum of people in our world that don’t neatly fit into the “F” and “M” boxes.   Society and individuals need to ...
